Purple hair and free expression (Update 2)

Government school administrators in a town in Arizona apparently can’t concentrate in the presence of a girl with some purple hair. Other students had no problem concentrating. Her classmates have seen purple t-shirts, purple hand bags, purple dresses, purple eye shadow. Purple hair was not shocking.

Government admins disagreed. They demanded the Sadie Pendleton remove the hair dye. Well, that wasn’t so easy since the dye was semi-permanent, meaning it would take about two months to wash out. Her parents insisted she be allowed to remain in the school, and the admins backed down but still forbid Sadie from adding more dye to her hair.

Update 1 from Sadie’s father:

“After the purple faded, we proceeded to dye red streaks. The school has said NOTHING regarding the red!”

Update 2 from Sadie’s father:

Thanks again! We have another student that tried to dye her hair a natural color but it turned out green. Same school!

She was told by the school that she cannot return until it was back to normal. Her father went to the school to fight it and they are letting her come back as long as it’s fading!

The good news is that more are standing up for the right to freely express! Soon more will do the same and we will prevail!

Her parents are right — this issue is more about free expression, than some hair dye. The gov’t admins can’t stand to see someone act like a free individual, a free thinker.

If other students were in fact distracted by someone’s hair style or clothing or car, the admins should speak to those students who may be suffering from envy or boredom or a failure to concentrate. These are the students who need help. Outside of schools, people have purple hair. A person who cannot produce when faced with purple hair will find it difficult to earn a living.

Hopefully, more students will choose to express themselves with their hair.  Wax, dye, close cuts, braids — all of these options can create some individual style.

      I love this. I graduated HS in 2001 in a small town in NC. We weren’t allowed to have unnatural hair colors.
      We also weren’t allowed to wear tank tops, our “sleeves” had to be at least three fingertips wide. Our skirts and shorts had to be at least fingertip length when standing. No cutoffs, no matter the length…

      I still have issues with the idea of dying my hair odd colors.
      In high school it simply wasn’t allowed.
      In college I couldn’t afford it.
      Now I don’t want to ruin any chances of getting a job.

      I completely agree with the right for freedom of expression. I am on board with somewhat of a dress code to keep sexual ideas to a minimum at school but not so restricted that they are only allowed to wear polo shirts. I am having this issue at my kids schools in Las Vegas, NV. The biggest problem with it is that it is public school and only a few of them have this policy. This is not a district wide rule. I would prefer my kids wear what they have so I don't have to go out and buy more clothes just for school. It doesn't save money like some will claim, because we are getting more clothes to suit the rules. I guess some parents like it because their kids already wear polo. My children are more individual than that! BA BA MY LITTLE SHEEP.I WON'T LET THEM SEE ME WEEP.       Bastards. At my school you aren't allowed to wear a hat because it could have gang signs, and also, my school follows an archaic rule that you have to have your head uncovered inside of a building. Thankfully I can get around it somewhat because of by more libertarian teachers.
