1997 San Diego Curfew Protests |
 |
(7/25/97) Friday night's rally, the 15th consecutive one, was attended by more than 150 people and an unexpected group of 12 police officers. No Time, a local ska band, played during the rally but was eventually stopped by the police, due to noise complaints. Though the police stopped the band, there were no arrests and the rally continued for another hour.
By going live at 11 p.m., Channel 8 news became the rally's next attraction. Channel 8 was there to report on the rally's impact on the neighborhood. After 15 rallies, the local residents, despite living 2 blocks from a roller coaster, will not tolerate any violation of the noise codes. In response, we have stopped using a megaphone, stopped yelling, and we have changed the schedule of the rallies.
The rallies will now be held every other Saturday Night. Weekly rallies will increase our numbers and our energy. This was the most successful of all the past rallies and it proves that our campaign is getting stronger. Like the Blacks of Birmingham who buried segregation, we will also place San Diego's curfew into the cemetery of oppressive laws.
