Homeschooler's poem sums it all up
Hi! My name is Courtney Furgason and I'm 13 years old. My brother, sisters and I have been unschooled all our lives and my mom is the founder of Houston Unschoolers Group. Here is a a poem I wrote for the American High contest that our local PBS station had and I was a finalist.

Freedom

I don't need an essay to describe who I am. I need just one word- freedom.

I don't need grades to learn because I have the freedom to study whatever interests me so I learn it well.

I don't need violence to assert myself because I have the freedom to leave if people don't treat me with respect.

I don't need drugs to escape because I have the freedom to go where I want.

I don't need gangs to give me a sense of belonging because I have the freedom to develop real friendships with people of all ages who share the same passions I do.

I don't need school to tell me who I am because I have the freedom to choose my life and my future.

I am free!
